Cars kill societies. It really comes down to cars. Just eliminating all car usage for personal transport would put a huge dent in the problem. I'm not saying for transporting goods...that is obviously still needed. But to transport a person from point A to B...no.

Combine that with a maximum income (which, amazingly, has still never been done) requirement and you're well on your way to sustainable. You would also have to have some sort of population management. The Earth's ecosystems (not talking energy, just ecosystems and renewable resources) can probably only support 1-2 billion people living a modest modern life. Any sci-fi dream of a planet-wide city always means you have to have some kind of galactic empire sustaining it. Not gonna happen. We are seeing our planet strain against the amount of urbanziation we already have.
