Oil. In 1955, oil was still pouring out of the ground cheaply and easily. We have to spend more and more energy and material to get to it now...deep underground or under the ocean. Cheap oil was a one time gift, and we used it to make big cars that went really fast and a society designed around that machine. Oops.
