So much change that would have to happen to get rid of it. Living in the Czech Republic, which has benefited immensely from free movement in the EU, you can still see the local fear and loathing of outsiders coming in. And when Covid came down, borders went up so fast. It was a wonderfully convenient excuse.

I agree with abolishing passports of course. So many fears to be assuaged though. Culture issues, job issues, tax issues. Just a small loosening of the rules just about broke the EU. Right wing governments popped up like mushrooms after the rain...
