Unfortunately, what Americans need to do now is drastically reduce their standard of living. Anyone who is spending more than about $12000 a year as an individual is above the median for the planet. And that's a planet that is burning.

So, a household of 2 parents, 2 kids should be spending somewhere between $36000-$48000 maximum. Basically, you need a 100% tax on any spending that goes above maybe double or triple that. And then a minimum income of maybe half that.

That's a tough sell.
