Yes, fossil fuel use is incompatible with a habitable planet. Not using them will require about 7 billion less people living at a way lower standard of life than the median American.

Trying to keep industrial civilization with 8+ billion people on the planet rolling along while removing fossil fuel energy and the chemicals that come from it will not happen. It just won't.
